Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction

Tummy Tuck vs. Liposuction

Tummy Tuck | Liposuction | Plastic Surgery | Inland Empire | Chino CATummy tuck is a comprehensive cosmetic surgery procedure designed to produce a flatter and firmer abdomen. However, in some cases, a patient may require only targeted fat reduction from the abdominal area, for which the plastic surgeon may recommend a relatively lesser invasive liposuction procedure.

Shine Cosmetic Surgery, led by Dr. Daniel Lin, provides state of the art procedures such as tummy tuck and liposuction. The practice receives patients from West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and surrounding communities.

Tummy tuck will be a more suited cosmetic surgery procedure if the patient suffers from excess fat deposits in both lower and upper abdominal area, along with loose skin and weak underlying muscles. Liposuction, on the other hand, may be recommended by a plastic surgeon only in case where the skin elasticity is still fairly intact and the underlying muscles are tight. In such case, targeted fat reduction in the abdominal area may be performed with liposuction.

Tummy tuck surgery is more comprehensive, which will usually make it relatively longer and more expensive compared to liposuction. Visible scarring in case of tummy tuck will also be higher. Therefore, liposuction is a more popular procedure because of its limited complexity, but at the same time, the results are also limited in scope.

Recovery in case of tummy tuck surgery is relatively longer and may be more painful for some patients. The patient may be required to stay overnight at the surgical facility and take about two weeks off from work. Liposuction, on the other hand, can be a quicker procedure with shorter recovery period. Advanced techniques such as tumescent liposuction can be performed simply with local anesthesia.

Typical candidates for tummy tuck include patients who are older and have suffered from skin laxity in the abdominal area due to age. The patient will usually have a higher amount of abdominal fat, and in some cases, may have weakened underlying muscles too. Women who have undergone multiple pregnancies may need tummy tuck more often as compared to liposuction.

Liposuction may be performed for relatively younger patients who have excess fat accumulation in the tummy area due to hereditary or other reasons. It is important that the patient should have a moderate and stable body weight to achieve best outcomes in both cases. Shine Cosmetic Surgery provides both procedures to patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and nearby areas.

Combination of Procedures

When a tummy tuck surgery is performed, the plastic surgeon will typically recommend some amount of liposuction procedure on the sides and hips. This can help achieve more uniform and aesthetically superior results. However, the converse of this principle is not necessarily true.

When a person needs only liposuction in the abdominal area, it is not common to combine it with tummy tuck. Patients should also be aware that both tummy tuck and liposuction are fat reduction procedures, and not weight loss surgeries.
