Tummy Tuck Procedure Steps

by Dr. Daniel Lin

Tummy Tuck Procedure Steps | Pasadena Plastic Surgery | Diamond BarTummy tuck is a major body contouring cosmetic surgery procedure that entails a series of steps. Depending on the surgical techniques, the steps may marginally vary. The operating surgeon will explain the procedure steps in detail during the initial consultation so that the patient may feel more reassured and be relieved of anxiety.

The patient should feel free to ask questions about the procedure, and may also request for a video or images showing how the procedure is performed. Dr. Daniel Lin is a board certified plastic surgeon providing tummy tuck to patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and surrounding locations.

Placing the Incisions

Following the administering of anesthesia, the surgeon will place incisions in pre-determined, discreet locations. The number and length of the incisions will vary according to the extent of surgery and the type of surgical technique used. For instance, a circumferential abdominoplasty may involve an incision around the entire waist line, including the back, while a mini tummy tuck may only involve one small incision beneath the navel.

Repositioning the Belly Button

In many of the tummy tuck cosmetic surgery procedures, repositioning of the belly button may be involved. With this step, the lifted and tightened abdominal area will appear more natural. The navel may be detached from its original position and placed in a more youthful location. In some cases, a new navel may be sculpted instead of reattaching the original navel. Only an experienced surgeon should perform such an artistic step.

Tightening the Loose Muscles

The underlying abdominal muscles may sometimes become weakened or separated over time. The plastic surgeon can tighten these muscles during the tummy tuck surgery. The abdominal skin will be separated from the abdominal wall through the incisions. The surgeon will then pull the muscles closer together and stitch them into a position to create a more toned appearance. The waistline will appear narrower with this step.

Removing Excess Skin

Once the abdominal muscles have been tightened, the skin will be pulled downward to make it tighter and smoother. The surgeon will then trim away the excess skin. Liposuction may be performed at this stage in some cases to remove excess fat tissue before the skin is pulled taut. Dr. Lin receives patients from West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and nearby areas for tummy tuck.

Minimizing Stretch Marks

Tummy tuck surgery is not designed to reduce stretch marks, but it is usually possible to reduce their appearance, depending on the location of incisions. Stretch marks below the navel can be removed along with the loose skin. Other stretch marks may also appear less conspicuous after a tummy tuck.

Closing the Incisions

Following the procedure, the surgeon will carefully suture together the surgical stitches. This will ensure that the wounds close naturally in due course. A surgical drain tube below the skin will be temporarily placed to collect excess fluid. The stitches and the drain tube may be removed together after about one week has passed.
