Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Overview - West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel ValleyAbdominoplasty, commonly known as tummy tuck, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to reduce excess fat deposits and loose skin around the waist area. The goal is to achieve a flatter and firmer abdomen in proportion to the rest of the body. Dr. Daniel Lin is an experienced plastic surgeon providing this procedure to patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia and nearby areas.

A surgeon would normally recommend this procedure for patients who have stubborn fat deposits and excess skin around the tummy, which does not respond to diet or exercise. Fat deposits around the abdomen may not necessarily occur due to unhealthy eating habits or sedentary lifestyle. In some cases, it may also be a hereditary condition.

People with moderate body weight, but having fat pockets in the tummy area are usually the right candidates for abdominoplasty. Like most other cosmetic surgery procedures, before recommending tummy tuck, the surgeon will first determine whether the patient is in good general health, and evaluate their previous surgeries, if any, and personal aesthetic goals. The ideal candidate should be a non-smoker or be prepared to stop smoking several weeks before and after the surgery. Patients with a positive outlook and realistic expectations can usually achieve best satisfaction levels from the procedure.

As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Lin may require his patients to undergo a few medical tests prior to the surgery. He will explain various aspects about the procedure to his patients in and around West Covina, Inland Empire, and San Gabriel Valley. The extent of the surgery and the decision whether to combine it with liposuction or another procedure will be taken by the surgeon in consultation with the patient. If the patient is taking any anti-inflammatory medications or herbal supplements, these may have to be stopped temporarily. Prescription medications may have to be adjusted in consultation with the physician.

Surgical Procedure

Abdominoplasty is typically performed on an outpatient basis. The surgeon may decide to use general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on the circumstances of the case. The procedure begins with the plastic surgeon making an incision horizontally between the navel and the pubic hairline. The shape and length of the incision may vary according to the extent of surgery needed.

The surgeon will repair and tighten the loose and separated underlying muscles through the incision. Loose skin and excess fat tissue will be removed, and the muscles will be sutured to achieve a firmer abdominal contour. If the patient has excess fat deposits in the upper abdominal area as well, a second incision around the navel may be required to reduce the fats. Incisions will be closed using sutures or skin adhesive.

Tummy Tuck Recovery and Results

The patient may experience mild pain and discomfort for the first few days following the tummy tuck cosmetic surgery. Most patients are able to resume their regular activities within 10 to 14 days, but heavy workload should be avoided for at least a month. Results of tummy tuck are long lasting, subject to the patient maintaining a regular diet and exercise regimen.
