Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Surgery-Recovery

by Dr. Daniel Lin

Why cosmetic surgery?

shutterstock_86306704However many liquid diets we try to stick to in a month or however many sets of stomach crunches we painfully pack in a day, doesn’t seem even close enough to reach the likes of the ‘abs’ of the Brad Pitt or Giselle Bundchen posters hanging up on our bedroom walls.

Here’s where we can turn to the help of plastic surgery. Cosmetic or plastic surgery is the medical process of reshaping, restructuring and contouring our facial features and body to achieve a solution to a certain medical condition or to achieve an overall improvement in aesthetic  appearance, thus acknowledging the age old saying-“Look good to feel good”.

What is a tummy tuck?

An abdominoplasty or in common lingo, a tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgery that involves the removal of excess fat and skin to achieve a more firmer and thinner stomach. It is commonly performed on people who have undergone sudden or increased weight loss, pregnancy, or who have loose or sagging muscles or tissue. There are many types of abdominoplasty procedures that can be performed to properly define the contour and shape of the patient’s abdomen and achieve best results, based on the patient’s lifestyle and body type.

A common tummy tuck procedure takes upto 2-3 hours. During the first few days after performing the surgery, it is likely that the patient will experience some amount of discomfort, bruising and swelling, so it is advisable that he/she take some time off from work. Any kind of strenuous or vigorous activity must be avoided, however, a small amount of exercise everyday along with a healthy diet can help the patient resume normal activity quicker.

Patients are also strongly advised to avoid smoking or any form of nicotine for one month before and after the surgery. Any pain or discomfort can be successfully treated with the right medicine prescribed by your plastic surgeon, and over a course of 5-7 days the surface stitches can be safely removed. The deeper stitches will be removed after 2-3 weeks.

Instead of dressing, the patient can wear a supportive abdominal garment to help minimize swelling and support the tissues. This compression garment will also help the tightened skin in the treated area, adapt to its new shape. Reaching normalcy may take a few weeks but patients who are physically fitter and healthier, with stronger stomach muscles may enjoy a faster recovery. The downside is that abdominoplasty will leave a permanent scar, but in 4-6 months should flatten out and slowly fade away. With proper care and time, the scar will be reduced to a hardly-noticeable, silvery line.
