by Dr. Daniel Lin

Nose Surgery Plastic Surgery

Rhinoplasty is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure designed to improve the shape or size of the nose in harmony with other facial features. The procedure usually involves sculpting of the nasal bone and cartilage to create the desired look. Balance of the facial features can be improved, structural defects can be corrected, and anomalies such as nasal bumps, flared nostrils, or wide nasal tip can be treated effectively.

Individuals with one or more of the following conditions may consider rhinoplasty cosmetic surgery procedure:

  •       Size of the nose is disproportionately big or small
  •       Nasal bridge has a bump
  •       Nasal tip is droopy, enlarged, protruding, or bulbous
  •       Nostrils are pinched or excessively flared
  •       Nose is asymmetrical after an injury or by birth
  •       Functional problems related to nasal breathing

Rhinoplasty candidates may also be teenagers as long as their nose development is complete.

Surgical Techniques

The plastic surgeon will choose open or closed rhinoplasty, which are the two primary techniques to perform this procedure. Dr. Lin receives patients in and around Pasadena, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, West Covina, Inland Empire, and San Gabriel Valley and nearby areas for rhinoplasty.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty is a relatively less invasive procedure. The surgical incisions are placed inside the nose, which ensures there is visible scarring on the outside. The surgeon will access main areas of the nose through the internal incisions to correct cosmetic as well as structural issues.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty involves an external incision across the columella, which is the area of cartilage between the nostrils. This technique will allow more access to the bone and cartilage of the nose, but it will also leave some scar tissue. Through the incision, the surgeon will lift the skin off the nasal tip and reshape the cartilage in a precise manner. Once the incision is healed, a very small scar will remain on the underside of the nose.

Choice of Technique

Effective results can be obtained with both closed and open rhinoplasty procedures. Depending on the natural shape of the nose and the patient’s unique aesthetic needs, the surgeon will choose the appropriate technique. Open rhinoplasty may be preferred if major alterations to the nose shape and size are required or a post-traumatic reconstruction must be performed.

In open rhinoplasty, the surgeon will have a greater access to a large part of the nose. This technique can also help the surgeon to make minor adjustments to the nasal tip. On the other hand, if the patient wants changes to the nose bridge, closed rhinoplasty may be a better choice.

Most patients will be ready to return to work or resume their daily activities in about one week to 10 days. Mild bruising and swelling in the incision sites is expected, but it will get eliminated gradually on its own.
