New Report from American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)

It shows the number of medical procedures done by Americans in 2014 has increased by 3% as compared to 2013. These medical procedures include both cosmetic surgical procedures and cosmetic non-surgical procedures.

2014 Surgery Stats

The actual figure for both types of medical procedures is 15.6 million as compared to 15.1 million of 22013. The figure for cosmetic surgery procedures for 2013 is (1,668,420) and 2014 is (1,667,478), respectively. That’s a rise of 1% in 2014 and if you were to compare the year 2000 with 2014, there is a decline in cosmetic surgery procedures by 12%.

Similarly, the actual figure for cosmetic non-surgery options for 2013 is (13,447,933) and 2014 is (13,945,388) respectively. That’s a rise of 4% in 2014 and a massive rise of 154% since the year 2000. (ASPS) also released that 5.8 million reconstructive surgery procedures were performed last year. The actual figure for 2014 is (5,769,824) in comparison to (5,734,120) of 2013; that’s a rise of 1%.

Apart from releasing these figures, (ASPS) also highlighted the trends in cosmetic surgery procedures, cosmetic non-surgery procedures and reconstructive surgery procedures. The details are listed below:

Top 5 trends in cosmetic surgical procedures:

  • Liposuction (risen by 5%; 210,552)

  • Breast Augmentation (Augmentation mammaplasty) (dip by 1%; 286,254)

  • Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty) (dip by 2%; 217,124)

  • Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) (dip by 4%; 206,509)

  • Facelift (Rhytidectomy) (dip by 4%; 128,266)

Top 5 trends in cosmetic non-surgical procedures:

  • Botox, Dysport (risen by 6%; 6,673,608)

  • Chemical peel (risen by 7%; 1,250,059)

  • Soft Tissue Fillers (risen by 3%; 2,301,673)

  • Laser hair removal (risen by 3%; 1,112,046)

  • Microdermabrasion (dipped by 9%; 881,905)

Top 5 trends in reconstructive surgery procedures:

  • Tumor Removal (no change; 4.4 million)

  • Laceration Repair (dip by 1%; 251,000)

  • Maxillofacial Surgery (no change; 199,000)

  • Scar Revision (no change; 177,000)

  • Hand Surgery (dip by 1%; 130,000)

The comprehensive ASPS report also showcases the impact of popular culture on the cosmetic surgery choices made by consumers in 2014. Butt enhancement which involves harvesting fat cells and then injecting them is up by 13% from 2013 to 2014; Butt implants are up by 98% in 2014; and Butt lift is up by 44% in 2014.
