Comparing these figures with the data of 2013, one can estimate the trends that are currently emerging in the field of aesthetic procedures.

According to the ASPS President Scot Glasberg, the demand for plastic surgery procedures continues to grow as medical advancements are leading to a wider array of treatment options. Overall Growth

In 2014, a total of 15.6 million cosmetic procedures, including both surgical and minimally invasive, were performed in the US, representing a growth of three percent over the previous year. Additionally, 5.8 million reconstructive procedures were performed in 2014, which was one percent higher than the previous year. With regard to minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, more than 13.9 million procedures were performed in 2014, registering an increase of four percent over the previous year.

 

Top Five Cosmetic Minimally Invasive Procedures

In 2014, the top five minimally invasive cosmetic procedures included:

  • Botox: 6.7 million (up 6 percent)
  • Dermal Fillers: 2.3 million (up 3 percent)
  • Chemical Peels: 1.2 million (up 7 percent)
  • Laser Hair Removal: 1.1 million (up 3 percent)
  • Microdermabrasion: 0.9 million (down 9 percent)

A total of 1.7 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed in 2014, representing a growth of one percent over the previous year. The top five procedures performed by plastic surgeons included:

  • Breast Augmentation: 286,254 (down 1 percent)
  • Rhinoplasty: 217,124 (down 2 percent)
  • Liposuction: 210,552 (up 5 percent)
  • Eyelid surgery: 206,509 (down 4 percent)
  • Facelift: 128,266 (down 4 percent)

 

Rapid Rise in Buttock Enhancement Procedures

Buttock enhancement was one of the fastest growing procedures in 2014 as compared to 2013:

  • Buttock Augmentation with Fat Grafting: 11,505 procedures (up 15 percent)
  • Buttock Implants: 1,863 procedures (up 98 percent)
  • Buttock Lift: 3,505 procedures (up 44 percent)

 

Increase in Breast Reconstruction Surgeries

Breast reconstruction is usually performed to restore the shape, size, and appearance of breasts following a lumpectomy or mastectomy. A total of 102,200 breast reconstruction surgeries were performed in 2014, recording a growth of seven percent over 2013.

The ASPS had launched a long-term awareness campaign to educate, engage, and empower women to make informed decisions about breast reconstruction in 2012, which is helping more women consider this procedure following a mastectomy.

 

Popular Male-Focused Procedures

Male breast reduction was a popular procedure in 2014, with 26,175 procedures performed. A total of 1,054 pectoral implant procedures were also performed on men, representing a jump of 208 percent over the previous year. Male plastic surgery rates have increased significantly since 2000.
