Facelift Surgery Recovery

by Dr. Daniel Lin

The facelift is a complex cosmetic surgery procedure because the face is a complex structure with several key components. A full facelift involves practically lifting the facial skin off the face to tighten underlying tissue and muscle, and reduce or reposition excess fat and skin. The recovery process can vary between two patients depending on the nature and extent of facelift surgery, the choice of surgical technique, the surgeon’s skills, and the patient’s natural ability to heal.

Board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Daniel Lin, provides facelift surgery to patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and nearby areas.

Recovery Process

Facelift surgery recovery process can have various forms, including physical recovery, recovery of skin sensation, emotional recovery and social recovery. Emotional and social aspects become important during recovery because a facelift is a sensitive procedure involving the facial identity of an individual. The basic period of recovery may last for about two to three weeks. The surgeon will remove the sutures in about a week, after which the patient may consider returning back to work. However, patients who are keen to be more discreet about their procedure may have to allow themselves at least two weeks at home.

Cosmetic Surgery | Diamond Bar | Pasadena | Arcadia | Brea | WhittierWhile most of the swelling and bruising will be resolved in two weeks, but some residual swelling will persist for a longer period. The patient may hide the appearance of swelling with makeup. Residual swelling will only appear as a fuller face in case the patient’s face is originally thin. By the third week, the patient will notice substantial maturity and improvement in the treated areas. Most patients will experience some degree of numbness in the skin near the ears, which will resolve on its own in a few weeks. Skin will be a little firm or hard in areas with sutures, but it will not be visible to others.

As the natural collagen continues to mature in the new wound bed, the facial appearance will improve. Mild pain and discomfort during the first week of recovery can be managed with over the counter medications or pain relieving drugs as prescribed by the plastic surgeon. Dr. Lin provides detailed care instructions for a safer and faster recovery to his patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and other areas.

Suggestions for Recovery

Following facelift cosmetic surgery, the patient should refrain from driving in the first week because there may be mild stiffness in the neck area. Mild exercises can be resumed after a week or 10 days. However, heavy lifting of weights and vigorous activities involving considerable physical strain should be avoided for at least four to six weeks.

If the patient has a busy social life, they will have to make up their mind on when to resume meeting people outside the home. After about two weeks, the facial swelling will be difficult to detect. The patient may adopt minor alterations to the hairstyle and use makeup effectively to keep the facial appearance discreet.
