Eyelid Surgery Procedure Steps (Blepharoplasty)

by Dr. Daniel Lin

Eyelid Surgery Procedure Steps (Blepharoplasty) | Brea Plastic SurgeryBlepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to rejuvenate the eyes and mitigate the effect of lines and wrinkles around the eyelids. The procedure involves a few important steps, which may sometimes vary according to the degree of correct needed in upper, lower, or both eyelids.

Dr. Daniel Lin is a board certified plastic surgeon providing eyelid surgery to patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and surrounding locations.

The patient is usually placed under local anesthesia and mild sedation in order to perform eyelid surgery. Some patients may have higher anxiety levels, or the surgery may be performed along with other facial procedures, which may require the application of general anesthesia. The patient’s candidacy for anesthesia will be carefully determined and their history of any drug allergies will be reviewed before any decision is made.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Once the patient is placed under anesthesia, the lower eyelid cosmetic surgery procedure will begin with the surgeon making small incisions in discreet locations around the lower lids. Natural skin creases below the lower eyelashes may be used to hide the incisions. Excess skin and fat will be removed through the incisions, and underlying muscles may be repositioned.

In some cases, an additional facial fat transfer procedure or cosmetic filler injections may be used to fill the hollows under the lower eyelids. Once the procedure is over, the surgeon will carefully close the incisions with fine sutures.

Upper Blepharoplasty

In case of upper blepharoplasty, the incisions will be made in the natural creases of the upper eyelids. Excess skin will be trimmed away through the incisions to remove the droopy effect of the upper lids and eliminate any partial vision obstruction issues. Underlying muscles may also be tightened through the incisions, if the muscles are weak or sagging.

The remaining skin after the removal of excess skin will be lifted and reattached for a smoother, more youthful upper lid appearance. Thereafter, the incisions will be closed with fine sutures. Dedicated plastic surgeon Dr. Lin receives patients from West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and nearby areas for eyelid surgery.

Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty

If the patient only requires reduction of fat pockets around the eyelids, and not skin tightening, the surgeon may recommend transconjunctival eyelid procedure. This surgery is less invasive and appropriate for patients where the under eye bags are not a major concern.

Multiple tiny incisions inside the lower eyelid will be placed following anesthesia. Through the incisions, the surgeon will remove the excess fat deposits to create an enhanced look of the lower eyelids. Muscle tightening or skin excision steps are not involved in this procedure.

Following the blepharoplasty procedure, the patient will be required to take adequate rest at home for about one week. The patient should be prepared to follow the surgeon’s post-op recovery instructions carefully to achieve outstanding results from the eyelid surgery.
