A Monumental Life Changer and Possibly Saver

Breast reduction procedure may not just be performed for aesthetic reasons, but also for medical reasons in some cases. If the patient suffers constant pain and discomfort in the neck, shoulders, and back area due to oversized breasts, the cosmetic surgeon may recommend this surgery.

Excessively large breasts can cause some patients to suffer from loss of self-esteem. Difficulties in performing various physical activities, outdoor sports and limitations with regard to choice of clothing are also common issues related with oversized breasts.

Who is a Candidate?

Dr. Lin will assess the medical history and general health status of the patient along with her breast anatomy and personal aesthetic goals before advising breast reduction cosmetic surgery to his patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, and surrounding communities.

A suitable candidate for breast reduction will typically have impressive physical health that allows her to undergo a major surgical procedure. The following attributes usually make a fantastic or appropriate candidate for this surgery:

  • The patient is unhappy with the oversized breasts for aesthetic reasons.
  • The patient suffers from physical constraints in various activities and exercises due to overly large breasts.
  • She experiences regular pain in the back, shoulders and neck due to the pendulous breasts.
  • Irritation or rashes under the breast fold, and skin indentations from bra straps are a common occurrence.
  • Areolas are oversized due to stretched breast skin.
  • The patient is a non-smoker or willing to stop smoking for several weeks before and after the surgery.
  • She has realistic expectations and clear goals about the procedure.

Breast reduction procedure may last for anywhere between one and two hours, depending on the extent of surgery to be performed and the number of procedures involved. This plastic surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. The procedure begins with the cosmetic surgeon making an incision in a pre-decided unobtrusive location. Excess breast fat and skin are removed through the incision surgically.

A number of incision choices are available to the surgeon. These include an incision made around the areola circumference, a keyhole shaped incision, vertical incision or anchor shaped incision. The plastic surgeon will reduce, shape, and lift the underlying breast tissue through the incision. If the areola is enlarged, it may be reduced by excising skin at the perimeter, and the nipple will be repositioned to a more youthful point.

The Full Process

Following the surgical reduction of the excess breast tissue, the incisions will be brought together to give the new shape to the breasts. The surgeon will suture the breast tissue from inside to support the smaller shape of breasts. The incisions will be finally closed with sutures or skin adhesive. Incision lines are visible initially, but fade and become thinner with time.
