What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure designed to increase the size, fullness, and volume of breasts. The procedure involves surgical placement of breast implants to give them the desired size, shape and projection in proportion to the rest of the body. Breast implant procedure is commonly performed as a cosmetic surgery on patients who are unhappy with the natural size of their breasts and wish to have enhanced breasts.

In some cases, breast implant surgery may also be performed on patients who have asymmetrical breasts, or have suffered loss of breast tissue due to mastectomy or breast injury. In some cases, the procedure may be performed in conjunction with breast lift to raise the position of sagging breasts along with improving their size. As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Lin may recommend breast implant surgery to suitable candidates in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, and others. Types of Implants

Breast implants are available in two primary types: saline implants and silicone implants. Saline implants are considered traditional implants that are filled with a saline solution. The FDA has approved these implants for women above 18 years of age. Silicone implants include a core that is made of cohesive silicone gel. These implants are approved by the FDA for women above 21 years of age.

Many patients prefer silicone implants because their touch and feel is more akin to the natural breast tissue. Both types of implants are available in round and tear-drop shapes. Sizes are available from 120cc to 960cc, and surface of the implants may be plain or textured. The right choice of implants has a bearing on the final outcome of the breast augmentation surgery. Patients should choose the most appropriate implants in consultation with their breast surgeon.

Breast Implant Procedure

The plastic surgeon will perform breast implant surgery using general anesthesia or IV sedation. The procedure is fairly customizable in terms of the choice of incision type, the placement position of implants, and the type of implants used. All these decisions are made during the pre-op surgical planning process in consultation with the patient. The incision is placed discreetly to keep the scars invisible as far as possible.

The surgeon begins the procedure by making the incision in the underarm area, around the navel, encircling the areola, or beneath the breast crease. The breast implant pocket is surgically created through the incision, and the implant will be placed below the chest muscle or between the chest muscle and the breast tissue. Once the breast implants are adjusted into position, the incisions will be closed with sutures.
