Breast Implant Surgery

by Dr. Daniel Lin

Breast Implant Surgery

Breast implant cosmetic surgery procedure involves the insertion of traditional saline based or silicone gel based implants in the breast tissue to increase the size of breasts. Most women seek this procedure for cosmetic enhancement, but sometimes breast implants may be placed as a part of breast reconstruction following a mastectomy.

After liposuction, breast implant surgery has emerged as the second most popular cosmetic procedure in the US. Dr. Daniel Lin is a well-known plastic surgeon providing breast implants and other procedures to patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and surrounding communities.

Breast implant surgery may be suitable for a woman who suffers from one or more of the following conditions:

  • Unhappy with disproportionately small sized breasts.

  • Breasts are asymmetrical.

  • Needs for more voluptuous looking breasts for aesthetic reasons.

  • Breast volume has been lost following a pregnancy or major weight loss.

  • Congenital defects in one or both breasts.

  • Breast reconstruction is needed following a mastectomy or breast injury.

Breast implant cosmetic surgery is one of the more customizable procedures that can be tailored to meet the unique needs of a patient. Patient will have choices regarding the size and type of implants, the location of incision and the placement position of implants.

Saline vs. Silicone Implants

Both saline and silicone gel based breast implants have been approved by the FDA for several years now. Silicone implants are relatively more popular today, but several patients continue to choose saline implants too.

Touch, feel and aesthetics may be better with silicone implants. Highly cohesive gummy bear or form stable implants are new, advanced qualities available today. Implant sizes are available from 120cc to 960cc.

Implant Placement

The typical choices for implant placement position include in front of the pectoral muscle, behind the breast tissue, or below the pectoral muscle. The choice of implant placement will have an impact on the type of incision, the invasiveness of the procedure, and the risk and recovery involved.

Incision Location

Incisions for implant insertion may be made along the breast crease, around the areola, or under the arms. In a few cases, a transumbilical incision may be used. As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Lin receives patients from West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and nearby areas for breast implant surgery.

Breast implant surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. The patient may be placed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Success rate of breast implant surgery is very high as long as the patient receives the procedure from a qualified and experienced cosmetic surgeon.

Recovery and Results

Most patients will experience some pain in the treated area for the first few days. The surgeon will prescribe pain medications for this period. Most women will be able to return to their normal activities or go to work in about 10 to 14 days. Results are usually long-lasting, and will appear more clearly over several weeks as the swelling subsides completely.
