Breast Implant Procedure Steps

by Dr. Daniel Lin

Breast Implant Procedure Steps | Pasadena Plastic Surgery | ChinoBreast implant surgery currently ranks as the number one cosmetic surgery procedure in the US. One of the reasons behind its popularity is that the procedure is highly customizable. However, the overall steps in breast implant surgery usually remain the same, even when different surgical techniques are used.

During the initial consultation, the breast surgeon will educate the patient about the procedure steps. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Lin provides breast implants to patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and surrounding communities.

Anesthesia

Breast implant cosmetic surgery is usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia. An anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist will remain present throughout the procedure to monitor the patient’s condition. The patient will remain sedated and will be totally comfortable during the surgery. She will be brought out of anesthesia once the incisions are closed and surgery is over.

In most cases, the patient will be allowed to return home a few hours after the surgery, once the effect of anesthesia has dissipated. She should have someone responsible to drive her back home after the surgery.

Creating the Incisions

Incisions will be placed in discreet, pre-determined locations after the anesthesia has been administered. The surgeon may place the incisions either in the breast crease, in the armpit, around the lower half of the areola, or in rare cases, in the navel area.

The surgeon’s goal will be to minimize post-surgical scarring. But the incision size and location will also depend on the size of implants and the patient’s unique breast anatomy. Experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Lin receives patients from West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and nearby areas for breast implants.

Implant Placement

The implants may be placed in front of the pectoral muscle and just behind the breast tissue (subglandular placement) or under the pectoral muscle (submuscular placement). Both choices have their own benefits and limitations, and the right decision will be made after taking into account the patient’s personal anatomical and aesthetic needs and goals.

Closing the Incisions

The incisions will be carefully closed with sutures once the breast implants have been placed in the breast pockets and adjusted into the appropriate position. The surgeon may use removable or dissolvable sutures. Dissolvable sutures will get absorbed by themselves, but the traditional sutures will have to be removed by the surgeon’s staff in about one week after surgery.

Placing Bandages and Drains

Once the surgery is completed and the incisions have been sutured, the surgeon will cover the treated areas of the breast with a gauze bandage for support. The bandage may be removed in a day and replaced with a special surgical bra, which should be worn at all times for several weeks. Drainage tubes will be placed in the skin beneath the incision areas to collect excess fluid, and may be removed along with the sutures within a week to 10 days.
