Cheek Implant Surgery Procedure

Cheek implants are also known as malar implants. These implants provide a permanent solution to increase cheekbone projection and give volume to cheeks that lack contour or are recessed. Cheek implants are available in various shapes, sizes and solid as well as semi-solid materials to address different facial structures.

The surgery itself is simple with a proven safety record. Furthermore, cheek implant surgery does not entail a lengthy recovery period after the procedure.

Cheek implant procedures can be conducted under general anesthesia or local anesthetic with IV or oral sedation. The surgeon will discuss the most appropriate surgical option with the patient before the surgery. They will also offer the patient information on various options for surgical techniques.

The cheek implants can be placed through beneath the lower eyelids or the mouth. But inserting implants through the mouth is more standard.

During the initial consultation, the surgeon will consider the patient’s preferences regarding a specific implant technique. The cheek implant procedure typically requires 30 to 45 minutes unless it is a part of a more significant facial surgery.

Cheek implant surgery involves the following steps:

  • The surgeon places surgical markings on the face for guidance on the placement of the cheek implants. These markings also highlight the facial structures beneath the skin that must be avoided.

  • The patient receives the anesthetic. When the patient is under the influence of the anesthetic, various monitors track the blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and pulse.

  • The surgeon places a tiny incision either underneath the eyelid or in the mouth dependent on the pre-surgery discussion on the implant technique.

  • The implant is cautiously placed in the pocket through a sterilized clamp. Malar implants are placed in the outer upper cheek area to create volume and contour. Submalar implants are placed in the mid or lower cheek area for providing a sunken face with fullness.

  • The surgeon positions the implant and secures it in place.

  • Then the surgeon uses sutures to close the incision. They may also tape it with a support or compression bandage to decrease the swelling.

After the procedure, the patient will be taken to a recovery area for close monitoring till they regain consciousness. In a majority of the cases, patients can go home after a short observation period.
