How to Prepare For Cheek Augmentation Surgery

by Dr. Daniel Lin

How to Prepare For Cheek Augmentation Surgery | Chino Plastic SurgeryPeople who are unhappy with the appearance of thinning cheeks or depleted mid-face volume may consider cheek augmentation cosmetic surgery. To ensure safe and desirable results from this surgery, the patient should prepare well for the procedure.

During the pre-op consultation, the surgeon will provide detailed instructions to the patient on the preparation. Patients who follow the surgeon’s instructions well will be better placed to achieve the best outcomes and will feel more confident about their decision to undergo cheek augmentation surgery.

Compassionate board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Lin provides cheek implants to patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and other cities and towns in this region of California.

Avoiding Smoking and Blood Thinners

If the patient smokes, the surgeon will instruct them to stop smoking for some time before and after the cheek augmentation surgery. Nicotine disrupts the oxygen flow in the blood, leading to greater surgical risks and an extended recovery period.

If the patient uses blood thinners such as NSAIDs or aspirin or certain herbal supplements and vitamin C, they may be asked to discontinue these meds for some time. The surgeon may also make some changes to their schedule of prescription drugs in consultation with the physician or specialist.

Practical Arrangements

Patients should apply for leave at their workplace in advance. They may need to spend about a week at home to ensure safer recovery. If the patient is not working, they should still plan to stay at home for a minimum of one week and postpone their social engagements until the healing gets better.

The patient should also enlist a responsible person to drive them home following the surgery. It may be a good idea to arrange aftercare for the first few days following the surgery.

In order to have a more comfortable and relaxed recovery period, the patient should complete any urgent home or work-related tasks in advance. The patient can also prepare a recovery kit at home for the initial recovery period containing the following items:

  • Prescription drugs and antibiotics

  • Gauze bandages

  • Pain medications

  • Loose fitting, front open clothes

  • A few books, DVDs, and music collection

A Day before the Surgery

The patient should wash their hair a day before the cheek implant cosmetic surgery to reduce infection risks. On top of this, they should not consume alcohol for at least 48 hours prior to the surgery. The patient should also get adequate rest and sleep well the night prior to the surgery.

The Day of Surgery

The patient should preferably wear loose fitting and front open tops to the surgical facility. In case the patient has diabetes, they should have their vital parameters checked on the morning of the surgery. The surgeon may require the patient to be on antibiotics before the surgery. The patient and their attendant should plan to spend the whole day at the surgical venue.

Balanced, Protein-Rich Diet

A healthy diet is a key part of the preparation process pre and post surgery. A balanced intake of nutrients will help the body resist infections during or after the surgery by building stronger immunity.

The diet should include lean proteins to promote faster healing. The protein content of the diet can be increased by including chicken, fish, yogurt, and light cheese.
