Botulinum Toxin (Botox) Procedure Steps

by Dr. Daniel Lin

Botulinum Toxin (Botox) Procedure Steps | Pasadena Plastic SurgeryAccording to the statistics published annually by the ASPS, Botox is the most popular aesthetic procedure in the US today for people who do not want to choose cosmetic surgery. Botox treatment has been approved by the FDA for the reduction of fine lines between the brows and crow’s feet around the eyes.

At the time of initial consultation, the Botox treatment provider will explain the steps involved in the injection procedure. Botox procedure is completed in a single office appointment lasting for about half an hour. Most patients can simply go back to their normal routine after the treatment.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Lin provides Botox injections to patients in West Covina, Inland Empire, San Gabriel Valley, Chino, Rowland Heights, Baldwin Park, Whittier, Brea, Arcadia, Pasadena, Diamond Bar, and surrounding locations in this part of The Golden State.

Learning about Botox

Prior to going ahead with the Botox procedure with a certified provider, the patient should ideally familiarize themselves with the treatment by reviewing the provider’s website or speaking to previous patients who have successfully received Botox injections. Once the patient has the basic information about Botox, they are in a better position to make the right choices.

Selecting a Botox Provider

Botox contains a powerful neurotoxin called botulinum type A, and should only be performed by a qualified treatment provider. If a cosmetic surgery practitioner offers Botox treatment, they would typically maintain the same best practices and quality standards for Botox which they follow for surgical procedures. The treatment provider should follow the current safety protocols to ensure safe and predictable results with Botox.

Information Disclosure

At the time of Botox consultation, the patient must disclose relevant information that the treatment provider may require. If they have undergone Botox or similar injections in the last six months, or they are currently using allergy medications, muscle relaxants or sleeping pills, they should let the provider know about it.

If the patient has been taking blood thinning drugs such as aspirin, they may be required to stop the medications for a few days to minimize the risk of bleeding and bruising. If the patient is a smoker, they will be required to refrain from smoking for a few days prior to Botox procedure.

Botox Appointment

An experienced provider will be able to complete the Botox injection procedure within a few minutes. They will first mark the targeted areas on the face, and apply a mild cleansing agent to disinfect the skin. Local anesthesia may not be required, but the provider may apply a topical numbing cream to keep the patient comfortable.

A narrow gauge micro needle will be used to inject Botox directly into the wrinkle forming facial muscles. Frown lines on the forehead and between the brows as well as crow’s feet are usually mitigated with this treatment. The provider may also treat non-label facial areas depending on the suitability of the candidate and their personal aesthetic needs. In most cases, one to three injections of Botox may be used to treat a specific muscle.
