Preparation
We understand each patient is different, so your instructions may look different. However, below is a general guideline patients should follow. We recommend taking care of:
- Smoking: Refrain from consuming tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, as they may constrict blood and hamper recovery.
- Transportation: You may not drive after surgery, so pick someone to drive you home.
- Medications: Temporarily discontinue specific medicines that may interfere with your surgery.
- Prescriptions: Pick up medications from Dr. Lin before surgery
- Work: Have a talk with your employer and schedule 1-2 weeks off from work.
Procedure
Patients undergoing liposuction surgery will be administered intravenous (IV) sedation anesthesia or general anesthesia by our board-certified and highly experienced anesthesiologist. For patients treating small areas, they may only need local anesthesia to ensure their comfort. Dr. Lin will begin by making a small (1-3 mm) incision in the area(s) of concern. [2] Then, tumescent fluid, a mixture of lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline, will be injected to minimize pain and reduce bleeding. [3][4] After the injection, Dr. Lin will insert a cannula under the skin to meticulously suction out the fatty tissue from the body. The process is repeated in each treatment area. Once complete, incisions are sutured closed, and compression bandages are applied to protect results. Depending on the places you’re refining, your treatment can last up to 3-4 hours.
Recovery
The recovery stage begins the moment your procedure concludes. Take it easy as the effects of anesthesia gently wear off. Afterwards, you’ll be able to offset any symptoms of bruising, tenderness, and discoloration with the medication prescribed by Dr. Lin. You should see these symptoms dissolve within two weeks. During your recovery, you’ll be instructed to wear a compression garment around the treated areas to maintain results. Within two weeks, you’ll be free to resume light activities, including desk work. Physically demanding activities should not restart until the fifth week of recovery. By week six, you should be fully recovered.
