Difference between Western and Asian Rhinoplasty

Ethnic rhinoplasty seeks to accomplish the same goal as “conventional” or western rhinoplasty, which is to improve the nasal contours to create better proportion and harmony with other features of the face. However, Asian rhinoplasty surgeons should have specific surgical skills due to many special considerations involved in the Asian nose surgery.

In comparison to the Caucasian nose, the Asian nose has several distinguishing characteristics. In general, the Asian nose has thicker skin, and the radix is deeper and flatter. It also has a lower or depressed nasal bridge. The nasal tip tends to have a broad dome. In addition, the tip and the nostrils may be wider, thicker skinned, and comprise more fibro-fatty tissue.

The underside of the nose (columella) also tends to be minimal. Furthermore, people with darker complexions have a tendency to scar more easily. Therefore, the surgeon has to place the incision more cautiously and pay special attention to post-op incision care.

Pigmented skin is also more susceptible to skin discoloration following surgery. Therefore, the surgeon must be skilled at placing incisions and reshaping the cartilage and skin for the best possible outcomes. Dr. Lin is an experienced ethnic nose surgeon in the Los Angeles area. He is highly skilled and trained in the unique facets of ethnic nose surgery.

Procedure

Dr. Lin undertakes ethnic rhinoplasty with the patient under either general anesthesia or sedation anesthesia.

General anesthesia may be more suitable if the patient requires an extensive nose surgery or if they are undergoing revision rhinoplasty. After the surgical preparation, Dr. Lin will place an incision inside the patient’s nose or across the thin strip of skin between their nostrils.

Most ethnic nose reshaping procedures will involve the placement of an outer incision as it enables Dr. Lin to open the patient’s nose and perform extensive correction. If the patient desires a higher nasal bridge, Dr. Lin will graft cartilage to accomplish this goal.

This cartilage is usually taken from the ear or nasal septum. The cosmetic surgery procedure can take between one to two hours depending on the extent of nose reshaping that the patient needs.

Recovery and Results

Dr. Lin is an eminent Asian rhinoplasty surgeon who is committed to helping his patients attain the best possible nose reshaping outcomes. He carefully monitors the patient throughout the recovery phase as ethnic rhinoplasty is an especially complex procedure.

The surgeon will apply a splint within the initial week after the surgery to help maintain the new shape. The initial inflammation will resolve within one to two weeks.

At this time, the patient can resume breathing through their nose and resume work and perform light activities. In around a month after the procedure, most of the inflammation will resolve, and the new nose shape will become apparent.
